Title: Anti-dysmenorrhea components from the rhizomes of Cyperus rotundus Linn. (Cyperaceae) Authors: Chen, Yun; Wang, Xiaoyi; Liu, Jintao; Huang, Liquan Abstract: To study the anti-dysmenorrhea effect and chemical constituents of the essential oil of the rhizome of Cyperus rotundus Linn.(EOC). Hydrodistillation method was used to extract EOC; column chromatography (CC) was applied for EOC separation; gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was applied for the analysis of fractions of EOC; oxytocin induced animal model was applied to evaluate the anti-dysmenorrhea effect of EOC and its fractions. 3.8 g EOC was obtained from 2.0 kg rhizome of Cyperus rotundus; 2 g EOC was subjected to column chromatography to afford six fractions, namely F1 (0.208g), F2 (0.208g), F3 (0.268g), F4 (0.389g), F5 (0.130g), (0.448g); EOC and its fractions F2 - F6 significantly reduced . distortion times in 15mins, 30mins after i.p. oxytocin injection; F4 performing the best among the fractions, containing spathulenol as well as β-caryophyllene oxide and isoaromadendrene oxide according to GC-MS analysis. EOC and its fractions F2 - F6 shows significant anti-dysmenorrhea; More than one components were attributed to anti-dysmenorrhea effect according to the GC-MS analysis of EOC and its fractions F2 - F6.
